Ireland Flights - History
Since the first Transatlantic passenger flight (operated by the national airline of Ireland - Aer Lingus) arrived at Shannon Airport in 1945, thousands of flights have operated between Ireland an America by a huge range of airlines. Nowadays, apart from Aer Lingus many other airlines operate regular scheduled services to several of the International airports in both Northern and Southern Ireland. British Airways, Delta, United Airlines fly to Boston, New York and Chicago to name just a few destinations. Flights operate from Dublin, Cork, Belfast and Shannon all over the world.

Ireland Flights - US Immigration
In June 1996, the Dail passed a bill allowing Ireland to join the countries of Canada, Bermuda and the Bahamas by allowing a pre inspection of passengers bound for the United States. The pre inspection, part of the United States immigration process allowed passengers travelling to the United States and departing from either Shannon or Dublin airports, the facility to pass through immigration checks prior to boarding the aircraft and not on arrival at the destination airport which is the case with passengers departing from other countries.

Only customs checks were required at the destination airport, however in 2009 the customs check was also incorporated as part of the pre inspection at Shannon airport with Dublin airport following in 2011. Today's passengers departing from Dublin and Shannon are greeted with signs welcoming them to America despite them having even boarded an airplane! This immigration facility is a huge timesaver for passengers who can land in America without having to queue for passport and border control.

Ireland Flights - Munster
The following airports are in the province of Munster which includes counties, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Waterford Limerick and Tipperary (the airport codes are in brackets):

Cork International Airport (ORK) is located four miles from Cork City. It is an airline hub for several airlines including Monarch, Ryanair and Aer Lingus. Flighs destinations include Dubrovnik, Lanzarote, Florence and Jersey and airlines that serve Cork Airport include Onur Air, Wizz Air, Croatian, and Aer Lingus.

Kerry Airport (KIR) is a regional airport located in County Kerry in the Southwest of Ireland. As well as scheduled flights to destinations such as London and Scotland it also has several charter flights to the European Catholic shrines of Lourdes, Fatima and Medjugorj.

Shannon Airport (SNN) serves the south west of Ireland. It is located in Shannon, County Clare and is both a regional and International airport. Shannon airport became the worlds first duty free airport when the "Customs Free Airport Act" was passed in 1947

Waterford Airport (WAT) is located in the South East of Ireland in County Waterford, a county famous for its crystal! Flight destinations include London, Dusseldorf and Paris and airlines that operate from Waterford airport include Aer Lingus and Flybe.

Knock (NOC) - Ireland West

Knock Airport, also known as Ireland West airport is located approximately 3 miles outside the town of Charlestown in County Mayo. The airport was named after the village of Knock, a religious shrine visited by thousands of pilgrims every year where the Virgin Mary appeared with John the Evangelist and Saint Joseph in 1879. In the past, the airport has also be known as Horan International Airport, Knock International Airport and Connaught Regional Airport! Several large airlines including Ryanair, Aer Lingus and Lufthansa fly from Knock airport and flight destinations include England, Germany as well as regional flights to Dublin.

The province of Leinster includes the counties Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow and has the following airports (the airport name and their airport codes are in brackets):

Dublin International Airport can be found to the north of Dublin City. Irelands national airline Aer Lingus has its headquarters at Dublin airport. Several other airlines also operate from Dublin Airport, they include Ryanair, Aer Arann, Delta, American Airlines, Emirates, Air France and British Airways. The airport operates regional flights all over Ireland as well as many long hall flight destinations including America and Canada. Dublin airport has two terminals and several car hire companies operate from the airport including Hertz, Buget, Avis and Eurocar.

Weston Airport is located just outside Dublin in Leixlip, County Kildare. It is mainly used for private aircraft and pilot training. The airport has hosted many air displays and has also been used as a filming location, many of the ground shots from the 1966 movie, The Blue Max were filmed at Weston Airport

Belfast International Airport also known as Aldergrove is located in Northern Ireland, approximately 18 miles outside of Belfast City. Airlines that serve Belfast International include United, EasyJet, Thompson and Aer Lingus. Regular shuttle bus services operate between the airport and Belfast City. Several car hire operators are based at Belfast Airport including Hertz and Europcar. Belfast is an ideal starting point for visitors touring Ireland but it is important to inform the hire company if you intend to take the vehicle into the Republic of Ireland so they can ensure the vehicle has the correct insurance and you have the breakdown and emergency numbers for the Republic.

Belfast City Airport is a regional airport serving England, Scotland and the Isle of Man. It was renamed to George Best Airport in 2006 to commemorate the life of Northern Ireland's most famous footballer. The airport is located near Belfast docks in Northern Ireland, about three miles close to the city centre and the Titanic Experience. Airlines that use George Best airport include Manx2.com which serves the Isle of Man as well as Flybe, BA and Aer Lingus. Belfast city can be reached by airport taxi, train, shuttle bus or by hiring a car from one of the many car hire desks in the arrival hall.

City of Derry Airport is located in the town of Eglinton, seven miles outside the beautiful walled City of Derry in Northern Ireland (also known as Londonderry). The airport is mainly served by Ryanair who operate flights to London Stanstead, Birmingham, Liverpool and Glasgow as well as several Flights operate to destinations including Faro, Tenerife and Salou. The nearest city is Derry which can be reached by airport taxi. Car hire is also available at the airport, most of the large car hire companies are based at Derry including Europcar.

Carrickfin Airport is located in County Donegal in the North West of Ireland. The airport is served by Loganair and Flybe and its routes include several daily flights to Dublin as well as flights to Glasgow Prestwick airport in Scotland. Car Hire is available at Donegal airport, Hertz and Avis both have desks in the arrivals hall. Airport taxis are also available with Dungloe being the closest town to Donegal airport. Dungloe (An Clochán Liath) is the home of the Daniel O'Donnell Visitor Centre and like every Irish town is home to several pubs!
